In 2002 David Brown, a.k.a. DB Grady, graduated from Louisiana State University with a Bachelor of Science in computer science. Soon after graduation he joined the Army and did a tour of duty in Afghanistan. At various points in his life, he has alley docked eighteen-wheelers, flipped burgers, jumped out of airplanes, and written Bezier spline generation algorithms. Currently, he is a member of the Authors Guild and the Association of Writers & Writing Programs, as well as a grant recipient from the Fund for Investigative Journalism.

David Brown has investigated and discussed how the government secrecy industry has grown exponentially and how personal privacy is facing attacks from numerous fronts. "It's astonishing and it's only getting worse," Grady commented about the incredible amounts of information that has been labeled as 'secret' by our government. According to his research, the amount of government workers or contractors who have 'secret' or 'top secret' clearances is in the millions and could account for the entire population of the city of Chicago. He explained that this is because so much information has been classified over the years that such clearances are required "just to do your typical day-to-day job."

Renowned author, physiologist, evolutionary biologist and bio geographer, Dr. Jared Diamond, joins Jason Hartman for a discussion of his newest book, The World Until Yesterday. Dr. Diamond’s unique background has shaped his integrated version of human history. He posits that success – and failure – depends on how well societies adapt to their changing environment.

Dr. Diamond is also a medical researcher and professor of physiology at the UCLA School of Medicine. His book "Guns, Germs and Steel" won a Pulitzer Prize and "The Third Chimpanzee" was a best-selling award winner. Elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences and the American Philosophical Society, Professor Diamond is a MacArthur Fellow who has published over 200 articles in Discover, Natural History, Nature and Geo magazines.

In his books Guns, Germs and Steel and Collapse (and the popular PBS and National Geographic documentaries they inspired), big-picture scholar Jared Diamond explores civilizations and why they all seem to fall. Now in his latest book, The World Until Yesterday, Diamond examines the traditional societies of New Guinea -- and discovers that modern civilization is only our latest solution to survival.

Genae Girard and her lawsuit against Myriad Genetics may just have altered the course of humanity. Genae was the lead plaintiff in a lawsuit against the U.S. Patent Office and Myriad Genetics, who had been allowed to patent human genes that were associated with breast and ovarian cancer, then monopolize the testing procedure.

Genae was in her early 30's and diagnosed with having a gene (BRCA) that leads to cancer. When she asked for a 2nd opinion, she was told that not only was Myriad the only company that could do the test, but even they would not retest her.

Gene Patents

Incredibly, this was allowed to go on with the blessing of the U.S. Government. In fact many other companies had patents pending for all different kinds of human genes that have been voided due to Genae's lawsuit.

The Unanimous Supreme Court decision in June of 2013 said, among other things, that it is unconstitutional to patent anything that exists in nature. The justices also said that what Myriad had done by creating this monopoly hurt every woman who had the same diagnosis as Genae. They had been able to call all the shots in this field, including which insurance they would accept and had banked all the data relating to their diagnoses.

What the Supreme Court Ruling means

The ruling broke the monopoly of Myriad Genetics over this incredibly important test. They had been charging an astronomical $3,500 just for the test, but with competition now allowed again, the price should drop to $150. Possibly more importantly, other companies will not be able to patent parts of the human body. How this will effect a mega multinational corporation like Monsanto, who has patented their seeds, has yet to be seen. But needless to say, Genae and her co-plaintiffs have changed the world.

Having served in a few wars and for different Presidents, Major General Jerry Curry tells us a little bit about his experience. He debunks several fallacies, including why gun control is for our own safety. Under the latest sequestration, defense cuts are widespread. Curry discusses the impact.  Jerry R. Curry is a statesman, a courageous soldier, a diplomat, and a government leader. Curry is a man of great intelligence, integrity, honesty, and proven character.  He is a person who has taken a stand for his country and devoted his life in its service.  He is a person who has lived out in practice what others just seem to talk about.

Curry wore the army uniform for nearly 34 years of active military service.  During that time he rose from Private to General. He was described as “The ablest tactical commander in the entire American army.” General Curry fought in the War in Vietnam.  He has seen first hand what happens when an enemy is given a safe haven to grow, train and export terrorism. He knows from years of experience what happens on the battlefield and he is prepared to be our commander in chief.

General Curry has not only served on the battlefield, but he has also served this country by assisting in the government in three federal administrations. He served as: Military Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense in the Carter administration; Acting Press Secretary to the Secretary of Defense in the Reagan administration; and Administrator of the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration in the Bush Sr. administration.
