Today's Flash Back Friday comes from Episode 79, from February 2012.

The lie detector is not a test for truth and the polygraphists know this. Join Jason Hartman as he interviews expert and co-founder of AntiPolygraph.org, George Maschke on the fallacy of lie detectors. George states that the practice of using a polygraph test has not been scientifically proven to be accurate and that, for the most part, it gets people to divulge information based on “control” questions, and also “buffer” questions that are not even measured. The polygraph measures physiological responses, such as breathing, blood pressure, heart and perspiration rates, which are compared to the reactions of lie-control questions. George explains how it is often used to trick people into handing over information, how the test is not 98% accurate, but closer to only 50% accurate, and how it is sometimes used as a plea bargain in court cases to “prove” innocence or guilt. George shares many instances where the guilty were able to manipulate the test and go free unless other evidence was found to convict, and also instances of innocent people being found guilty. He lists many ways that a lie detector test can be beaten.

George Maschke became a co-founder of AntiPolygraph.org and an author and activist against the use of lie detectors after wrongly failing a polygraph to get into the FBI. The organization is a non-profit, public interest website dedicated to exposing and ending waste, fraud, and abuse associated with the use of polygraphs and other purported “lie detectors.” George is co-author of “The Lie Behind the Lie Detector” with Gino J. Scalabrini. George was born and raised in Long Island, New York, where he graduated from Westhampton Beach High School. He joined the U.S. Army for a four-year enlistment, and then moved to Los Angeles, California to study at UCLA, where he received his bachelor’s degree in Near Eastern Studies, followed by a master’s and doctoral degree in New Eastern Languages and Cultures. He currently lives in The Hague, Netherlands, with his family as a legal translator.

Jason Hartman talks with Jon E. Mica, a writer and the father of a son who has been diagnosed with autism. Jon is author of “The Autistic Holocaust: The Reason Our Children Keep Getting Sick”, a book that accuses the federal government of refusing to acknowledge it as such and having a corrupt and morally unsound relationship with “Big Pharma.” First noting the dramatic rise in cases of autism in the United States since the 1970s, Autistic Indifference then discusses the rampant misuse and dangers associated with vaccinations. Additionally, the book argues that the Center for Disease Control has lied to the American public by presenting inaccurate data on annual flu deaths and, along with the Vaccine Safety Datalink, has buried damaging research on the perils of vaccines.

Key Takeaways:

[5:31] How the legal system is benefiting pharmaceutical companies

[12:22] Comparing the USA’s vaccine rules against the rest of the world

[16:06] Ways we can take action

[21:22] The evidence that vaccines aren’t as safe as we’ve been told

[26:57] Why drug companies are using drugs that are dangerous for us in our vaccines and how much it would cost to change it

Today's Flash Back Friday comes from Episode 101, from August 2012

Jason Hartman is joined by author, Gordon G. Chang, to discuss the looming proliferation of nuclear weapons, particularly in North Korea. Gordon talks about the skepticism surrounding North Korean intentions, noting that the KNO-8 missile was unveiled and was to be transported on TELs, Transporter Erector Launchers, of Chinese design. He says it’s very likely the Chinese are arming the North Korean forces. The KNO-8 has the potential to reach Alaska and U.S. forces in the Pacific. It is considered a direct threat to our homeland and completely unacceptable. Gordon feels there needs to be some very candid conversations about this issue. He talks about the instability and belligerence of the North Korean regime that doesn’t bode well for their relationships with South Korea and the U.S. With the hard-line, barbaric elements controlling the regime under young Kim Jong-un, it could take a half decade or more to establish a more stable North Korea.

Jason and Gordon also discuss the fragile political and economic system in China. As the workforce shrinks, China is at risk of collapse due to low economic growth and very interesting developments happening, creating a volatile society. The “economy is stumbling, the Communist party is fracturing, the authority of the central government is eroding, the military is breaking free of civilian control, and while all of this is happening, the Chinese people are taking to the streets hundreds of thousands of times a year and often in violent protest,” says Gordon, based on the last figures available in 2010.

In wrapping up, Gordon states that the change in nature of the regimes in both countries put everyone at risk. He suggests the U.S. stop looking at China as a solution for North Korea and instead create a new policy of working with its friends in the region. Gordon G. Chang is the author of Nuclear Showdown: North Korea Takes On the World, released by Random House in January 2006. Showdown focuses on nuclear proliferation in general and the North Korean crisis in particular. His first book is The Coming Collapse of China (Random House, August 2001). He is a columnist at Forbes.com and The Daily and blogs at World Affairs Journal. He lived and worked in China and Hong Kong for almost two decades, most recently in Shanghai, as Counsel to the American law firm Paul Weiss and earlier in Hong Kong as Partner in the international law firm Baker & McKenzie. His writings on China and North Korea have appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, the Far Eastern Economic Review, the International Herald Tribune, Commentary, The Weekly Standard, National Review, and Barron’s.

Jason Hartman welcomes Economist Mike Norman to the show to discuss Modern Monetary Theory or MMT. Mike shares examples of common misconceptions people have of the US monetary system and economy, such as the US debt clock, that inflation equals growth, and how the tax system works. He believes that the US has an unlimited supply of capital and balancing the budget or functioning as a fixed monetary system would accomplish the opposite of what is needed to create growth.

Key Takeaways:

[1:40] Modern Monetary Theory (MMT) explains the value of money.

[4:39] A tax system is required to create demand for money.

[9:31] A fixed monetary system creates cycles of economic depressions and recessions.

[11:53] The US national debt is a summation of what is owned by the US and its constituents.

[19:25] A dollar must be created and pumped into the economy before it can be used to pay a tax debt.

[21:46] The US has an unlimited amount of new capital.

[27:13] There is a difference between inflation and growth.

Today's Flash Back Friday comes from Episode 117, from December 2012.

In light of the recent election results, thousands of people across the United States started petitions to the government requesting that their state secede from the Union.  Drew Zahn, news editor at WND, joins Jason Hartman for a discussion about this movement that immediately followed on the heels of Obama’s re-election.  Drew and Jason talk about states’ rights, pointing out that many citizens feel our individual rights are also being infringed upon through some of President Obama’s mandates, such as healthcare reform.  The movement began with one gentleman in Louisiana asking for a peaceful secession from the Union for his state and very quickly snowballed.  Drew explains the legality involved in secession, noting that there are three ways that a state can leave the Union.  Citizens in all 50 states have petitioned the White House, with many states having acquired more than enough signatures to meet the requirement of the government’s policy for petitions.  Jason and Drew discuss the ramifications, good, bad and difficult, of a state actually legally seceding.

Drew Zahn is a reporter, movie critic and one of the news editors at WND.com, the nation’s oldest, largest independent online news source.  A graduate of Bethel University in St. Paul, Minnesota, Drew Zahn is a former pastor, who cut his editing teeth as a member of the award-winning staff of Leadership, Christianity Today’s professional journal for church leaders.  He is the editor of seven books, including “Movie-Based Illustrations for Preaching and Teaching,” which sparked his ongoing love affair with film and his weekly WND column, “Popcorn and a (World)View.”  He and his wife and their 16 children live in Iowa.

Sunday night in Las Vegas shook the town and, tragically, saw the loss of life to over 50 and caused injuries to over 400 participants at the Route91 Christian Music Festival. The deranged gunman who fired at them was shooting from the Mandalay Bay hotel, where Jason Hartman happened to be attending a meeting.

Jason took some time Monday evening to reflect on his experience as the realization dawned on him, and the other meeting attendees, that someone was shooting at people on the ground. He also talks to his friend, Larry, who stayed at the meeting a little longer and ended up being locked into the hotel and having to spend the night in the meeting room. Larry tells about the scare they received in the room, how the situation was handled, and when he was allowed to leave.

[1:13] Hearing the gunshots from the balcony of the meeting room, and the slow realization that something was horribly wrong

[5:40] The biggest terrorist attack in the US since 9/11 and the fear that the next one will be even bigger
